So a song that, of course, I had to include on reprise and I was very happy to include
is Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?
Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad, strangely, was the first big single, and I feel a little
weird referring to anything I've done as a big single, but Why Does My Heart ended up
being this very strange hit single from the album Play.
Because again, when Play was released, I thought it was going to fail.
Everyone around me thought it was going to fail.
We were excited when it sold 50,000 copies worldwide.
And so Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad became this interesting, strange hit single throughout
Europe, which I was very happy for, but it didn't make sense to me because it was such
a delicate song and such a quiet song.
And so when it came time to make reprise, I fully understood the orchestration.
I was like, I can handle that, the parts for the string quartet, I know how to do that,
the drum arrangements.
The piano, all this stuff I knew how to do.
The one thing that was a real struggle was finding someone to capture the spirit of the
song with their voice.
And eventually, I looked right in front of me and I saw my dear friend Apollo Jane.
And I was wondering to myself, like, why am I looking at the rest of the world for a great
singer when one of the greatest singers I know is my friend?
And I was like, why am I looking at the rest of the world for a great singer when one of
the greatest singers I know is my friend?
And I was like, why am I looking at the rest of the world for a great singer?
And so I asked Apollo Jane to sing it, and I think she had some hesitation because it
is a fairly iconic vocal part, but she did such a beautiful version.
And then Dietrich Hadden joins her in the choruses, but her vocal approach, the delicacy
and the restraint, just capturing the sadness of the song.
So, yeah, I'm really thrilled with the way it came together with the orchestra, Dietrich
Hadden.
And Apollo Jane.
