He worked afternoons and most weekends
With that and the books, there was no time for friends
Dad worked until he filled the tanks
Every dollar went into the bank
With big plans of getting away, he said
I'm gonna change the world one day
Campus call, the place was set
He's gonna be a doctor yet
On his last day living in the highway town
A man pulled up with a window down
No shirt, just a black leather vest
Snake tattoo on the front of his chest
It was over before the kid knew
The shotgun fired and the window blew
His father died, but as he slipped away, he said
What goes around comes back one day
Oh, what goes up must come down
Life's a dance, we all go around
It's always been a small world after all
You give what you get, you get what you give
To each their own
Live and let go, live and let go
To live, but someday there'll be nowhere left to fall
Nowhere to fall
When karma comes to call
Ten years on and the boy's a man
Working hard doing what he can't do
He works long hours for a doctor now
A long way from his highway town
He still thinks back to the fateful day
And what if it all went the other way
He wouldn't be saving lives today
And I guess that's why he'll always say
You can hear him say
What goes up must come down
Life's a dance, we all go around
It's always been a small world after all
And you give what you get, you get what you give
To each their own
Live and let live
Someday there'll be nowhere left to fall
Nowhere to fall
And karma comes to call
He's coming to call me now
Oh...
In the back of his mind
Is a heavy thought
It keeps on breaking him down
If he only knew
Way back then
All that he knows now
Some people say
He lost his mind
Others say
He just lost control
Why did the doctor do
What he did that day
Everybody talked
But nobody really knows
It was a cold red
The man was almost dead
They wheeled him in
On that emergency bed
And he watched
And let him bleed to death
There was a snake tattoo
On the front of his chest
On the back of his mind
