Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, I feel called to tell you the story behind this song.
My grandparents, Lloyd and Betty Kissel, two of the biggest influences in my life, they
were on their way to come see me play a Christmas concert in my hometown, and we lost them in
a car accident that night.
And I think about them every day, I miss them every day, and the only thing I could think
about doing was putting my pen on paper and writing this song for them and for my family.
But I also want to dedicate this song to anybody out there who needs to hear these lyrics.
I remember being all dressed up underneath that
old, old tree, the day we laid my grandpa down.
For all my life, I'd been his shadow, his little man.
I was learning what hurt was all about.
That was the first time I ever saw my daddy cry.
