This is a
Brazos River song.
Brazos River is in Eastman Park, Texas.
There
was a wealthy old farmer that lived in the county bar.
He had a loving daughter on whom I kissed my eye.
She was pretty tall and handsome,
indeed so very fair.
There was no girl in the county
with her that could compare.
I
asked her if she'd be willing to let me cross over the plains.
She said it would be
alright
just so I'd return again.
She said that she'd be true to me till death would
be unkind.
We kids shook hands and parted.
I left my girl behind.
Out in the western
city boys, a town you all know well.
Where
everyone
was friendly to show me all around.
Where work and money was plentiful and the girls to me were kind.
But the only girl I
thought about was the girl I left behind.
One day when I was rambling around all down
by the public square,
the mail coach came in and I met the mail boy there.
He handed
me a letter,
gave me to understand that the girl I left
in old Texas had never even hugged a man.
I turned myself around and around not knowing what else to do.
I read down a little piece further
just to see if these words were true.
It's drinking I throw over,
cart fling I resign.
For the only girl I ever did love was the girl I left behind.
Come around,
all around you rambling men and Russ,
I'm no out of town.
If it does to you,
no good kind friend on the shirt will do you no harm.
If you ever find a fair young maid,
marry her while you can.
If you ever cross over the plains, she'll marry
another man.
you
