From a summer sky, a butterfly Fell to the city streets And a little boy clapped hands with joy As it landed at his feet That city child was very wise He knew of many things But not at all of butterflies With lovely silken wings The boy reached out, didn't make a sound The creature tried to fly Annoyed he crushed it to the ground And stood and watched it die That boy is lost Too late to try to save him No one can A boy who'll kill a butterfly Will someday kill a man That boy is in the nuts But nothing really new He's just doing what we told him not to do We whisper words in private places Shed our secret tears Forgetting that those cherub faces All have eyes and ears And so we'll use our lungs Until we're practicers not preachers Who don't just say thou shalt not kill And love thy fellow creatures That boy is lost Too late to try to save him No one can A boy who'll kill a butterfly Will someday kill a man That boy is lost Too late to try to save him No one can That boy who killed a butterfly Let's try to save his soul Thank you.
