Just a lad of twenty-one with the whole world in his hand
For the life he was to live he had no certain plan
For a year or two he's breaking hearts and learning the ropes of life
Now at the age of twenty-four it's time he takes a while
At the age of twenty-five they both are working hard
Long hours on the job, trying to pay back all they borrowed
Then comes along a child or two, but somehow they get by
For struggling's not so hard to do with someone by your side
Things level off, but you don't have to worry
So at twenty-eight he goes out with the boys
Starts staying out late at night doing things that he enjoys
Meets a girl that makes him wonder, does he really love his wife?
The kind of girl who makes him feel he's been cheated out of life
He knows he loves his children
But he feels they tie him down
He'll have to choose between them and the new love that he's found
Temptation from the wildlife will help him make the choice
And the life it took him years to build he tears down with the oars
Now at the age of thirty-one he finds himself alone
For the new love that he's found
The new love that he thought he'd found has long since been gone
Now he's thinking back upon all the best years of his life
Wishing that he had a chance to go home to his wife
He swallows all his pride and he knocks upon her door
Hoping things will get better, hoping things will get better
Hoping things can be the same as they were once before
He finds her forgiving and a tear runs down her face
What he didn't know was two years ago another took his place
