So let's define mindfulness first. Mindfulness is simply moment-by-moment awareness of things just as they are. It's that simple, nothing complicated, instantly accessible. At any moment in time, we can use the reality of our body and environment to connect to the present moment. Self-care cannot take place while we are regurgitating the past or hypothesizing about the future. Self-care is in the here and now. So come, wherever you are, become aware of the space around you. Soften your gaze and see if you can take in light, color and texture. If you notice your eyes are darting around, steady your gaze. Become aware of your peripheral vision at the sides of your sight. Connect to your environment as if it is a natural extension of you. Begin to let your mind blend into the colors and light that you see without labeling or defining any one particular thing. Let yourself feel at home here in this space, at one with this place. Now, if it feels okay to, close your eyes. Direct your sensory awareness inwards. And with your eyelids closed, let the eyes rest still. And begin to awaken the sense of hearing. Send your sense of hearing outwards to the space around you. Find first the most dominant sound, rather than labeling the sound. Notice its pitch, texture, resonance and rhythm. And now let your awareness become more subtle. Listen to the smallest sound that you can hear without strain or effort. Let your awareness pass from sound to sound without leaving a trace. Hear the sound simply as the sound in its full sensuality without adding any stories or reacting to the sound. Allow yourself to feel at home and a part of this ever-evolving tapestry of sounds that is life.
