Site 8, Ball Bay.Ball Bay was the site of the first whaling station on Norfolk Island, before being moved to Cascade. It is now the site where the oil and gas tankers come to deliver their loads. The oil and gas is Norfolk's only supply, and it's used in motor vehicles, homes and refuelling aircraft. It is also used to run the diesel generators, Norfolk's main supply of electricity.Occasionally weather conditions will prevent immediate unloading, and ships may have to wait for days until conditions are safe to harbour in the bay. There is a gas line out in the middle of the bay which the ships connect to, and pump into the tanks on shore.Due to its sheltered nature, it is also where a temporary pier was built to bring shore equipment and materials for a recent airport upgrade.
