Site 10, Cockpit Reserve.Cockpit Reserve used to be the location of one of the first sawmills on the islandfrom convict settlement times, and a fish factory. The remains of these have since been removed. The fish factory was from when Norfolk had large export industries, including the Kendia palm seed, which still remains to this day.The waterfalls at Cockpit were named the Cascades by Captain Cookas he sailed along the coast after discovering Norfolk Island in October 1774.Cascade Creek is one of Norfolk's few permanent creeks on the island.Cockpit Reserve is some 100 metres from the sea,and if you walk down the track, you can see the creek cascade over a 10-metre high basalt cliff.Following the track further down will take you onto the rocky beach, where there is another 10-metre high layer of basalt over which the water flows. While there are other waterfalls around the island's coast, during high-intensity rainfall events,Cockpit Waterfall is virtually permanent and one of the most significant.
