In my last life upon this shore I slept my way to being pure
At nothing, sure of nothing Next to nothing less than emptiness
In such a life I paid my dues by dancing in my sleeping shoes
I made my messes by myself and never swept the floor
I couldn't, alright, disappear for sure
In my last life I prayed for more by gunning down the candy store
Protected all my customers with spider bites and kitten purrs
We'd roll around in sacred brass until it blew with broken glass
A picket fence of flying ants, exotic and insane
It wasn't always happy, but it wasn't really pain
Until it rained
So hard, from the garden to the earth
On the pavement, in the gutter
Like a wet leaf, I'd be smothered
It would pour like concrete
Onto my roof, onto my street
It would rain so heavily that I would die
When I woke up, I could live again
Another life
In my last life I played a fool
It was the gift I gave to you
Let you believe that playing roles
Was actually something I chose
I let you have a front row seat
A cushion where the mind lets meet
And you put up a front row seat for me
And you put up your stinking feet
And laughed until I cried
I must have been convincing
Cause you seemed preoccupied
Until it rained
So hard, from the garden to the earth
On the pavement, in the gutter
Like a wet leaf, I'd be smothered
It would pour like concrete
Onto my roof, onto my street
Poison puddles onto my feet
It would rain so heavily that I would die
When I woke up, I could live another life
It would rain so heavily that I would die
When I was warm and heaven-blessed
I blew apart my Sunday dress
It fell like mud onto the clouds
And deafened planet Earth
With sounds of sorrow and of holy bliss
I learned that God is just a kiss
A secret piece of outer space
Where people can erase the face of love
Gone so, loneliness and loss of power
Lack of anger, fits of rage
Write a book and burn the pages
Build a house and knock it down
Play the victor
Stop all the clown
These two feet need never touch the ground again
I swear I'm eternally awake and unawake
It would rain so hard
From the garden to the earth
Rain so hard
It would rain so heavily that I would die
It would rain so heavily that I would die
When I woke up, I could live another life
It would rain so hard
Rain so hard
Rain so, rain so, rain so hard
Rain so, rain so, rain so hard
Rain so, rain so, rain so hard on me
Rain so, rain so hard on me
Rain so, rain so hard on me
