There's this freight train that goes right through the city by my neighborhood where I've lived for the past 15 to 20 Years, and even when I was younger, I didn't live too far away And I remember this train when I was young. I remember having to stop And wait for the train But I really haven't remembered seeing the train in a long time And I think what happened is that the city got so big that they must have changed the laws or changed the times when the freight train could come through town because it would stop people in a city where traffic is already getting pretty bad and So I haven't seen the train in a long time. But the other night I got up early in the morning. It was you know, probably four I don't know and I Heard the train and it sent me back to another time in place When I was younger before I had kids I would sit up late at night and I wrote Most of my songs either on the porch or if it's too cold In my living room, but I would stay up late at night and write songs and There was a whole time in my life when I spent a lot of time at night And that train whistle just transported me back to that place because I remember I would hear it Every night when I was up late writing songs or reading or whatever it is that I did Late at night, but you don't notice that train at all during the day. You wouldn't even know that the train still exists anymore If you weren't up at night to hear it because you can't hear it or see it during the day at night It's the only time you get a chance to know that it's even there I started to think about a conversation I had with my friend Adam the other day About how the world looks different at night and I realized something During the day you see what's around you you see your world clouds buildings trees at night though You see the stars and you see the surface of the moon. So Technically at night you actually see more than you do during the day because even if you could see the whole earth Right if you could get away and you could see the entire earth you're still the earth is still smaller than a star One star is still so much bigger than the earth There's so much more mass in the star. So you actually see more at night than you do During the day and I thought that was really interesting That sometimes in order to see the bigger things or the bigger picture you have to be blind to the things That are right in front of you or around you and I mean, I know I'm definitely super easily Distracted I can be really scattered and so for me writing songs at night was really cool Because I was sort of shut off from a lot of the distractions of the day and the whole world became much more Focused when I wrote the song raging moon. I was in a time of life that I would describe as Disorienting and I remember writing that song and thinking about all the things that normally You know give light and offer light and illumination and how? I thought it'd be interesting to communicate those as things that also Hide or cover things up or see things from a different Or see these things in a different way. And I think what's really interesting is that sometimes in The seasons of my life when I seem to be disoriented or understand less about what's going on later on I look back and realize that those times caused me to see the world in a different way And sometimes the things that seem to conceal Have the potential to reveal new things that I didn't see before or that I was blind to Before and I think that's what I was Working through when I wrote this song, even though I wasn't fully aware of that I'm a huge fan of Kung-fu movie music. I like kung-fu movies, but I love the music I love Chinese instruments and we use Chinese instruments all over the original mercury and lightning and Maybe even more so on the sessions versions of the songs and we definitely feature the Chinese guzhing on this song you hear it and it has such a pentatonic thing. We thought if we just go full-on Kung-fu with it. It could be a lot of fun and I really like the way this turned out and you know It's it's totally not ironic. It's not silly like we really do love the kung-fu vibe and that's kind of where we landed with this song and I'm Personally pretty excited about that
