Yeah,
tell Madonna that I'll call her back in a little bit.
I have to do this one thing.
Oh, is this thing on?
No, I'm only kidding.
Hi,
it is Perez,
and this is the commentary track
for my pop-up number five.
I wanna start off by saying thank you
for buying this latest compilation.
This pop-up series is my favorite thing
that I do every year,
and we do it a couple times a year.
The first one,
pop-up number one,
came out in August of 2002.
That compilation had some of my favorite
artists who have gone on to really big things,
like Capital Cities was on that one,
The Cataracts was on that,
Alpha Beat was on that,
Donkey Boy,
High Fashion,
Curly,
and more.
The whole concept of the pop-up series is it's an opportunity
for me to share with you all some really cool music that
you may not have had the opportunity to discover on your own,
because radio in America plays the same
songs over and over and over again.
And we're inundated with so much information and so much music,
so this is a great opportunity for folks to discover great new music
and great new artists and people that I really believe and support.
Every artist on the compilation is somebody that I
handpicked myself and that I really believe in the song
and the artist and I think has a lot of potential.
And this one is no different.
I'm so happy with pop-up number five.
It's so eclectic.
I put a lot of thought into this and into just how to begin it all.
The first song in a compilation is really important,
so I thought that choosing Melanie Martinez's
Dollhouse was a great way to kind of set the tone.
It's a cool pop song,
but it's also different,
and that's the vibe that I was going for in this compilation.
The second song, Windy by Scarlet Pleasure,
I love because it's from a European band
and I love music from all over the world,
but it's also a little edgy and sexy and dangerous.
Next up,
we've got Chromio with Jealous,
and I've been a huge fan and supporter
of Chromio for years and years.
It's been so great to see them explode and become super successful,
and them letting me use their song on the compilation was a big favor
from them and an awesome opportunity to have their song help draw
attention to all of these other songs from maybe lesser-known artists.
So thank you to Chromio.
I love this song.
It's super them.
It's super awesome.
Jealous.
Up next,
we have Totally Right by Maya Vic and
Another European Girl and another fun
pop song.
If you don't know by now, I love pop.
That's why this compilation is called
Pop Up,
but what's great about it is that pop
is really an umbrella term that so many
different types of songs can fit into.
This one actually really reminds me of old-school
Stock Aitman Waterman.
You know,
the producers who did all those Rick Astley songs and old-school
Kylie Minogue?
Love it.
Love this.
Then coming up in track number five,
we have Who Knows
by Beginners.
This song just instantly spoke to me.
It's so dreamy.
I love dreamy.
I also
love female vocalists,
so this hit my sweet spot.
Following that, we have Be Okay by Oh
Honey,
which is such an uplifting song.
You know,
I never get tired of listening to inspiring music.
This song does that for me.
It's instantly infectious,
hooky, and I'm pretty sure you're gonna love it.
And then coming in at number seven is Wild Cub with Thunder Clatter.
I love that I have a good amount of guys on this compilation
because I normally do have a preference for the female vocalists.
and the female musicians and bands,
so it's great to have variety.
I love variety.
And actually,
2014 has been the year of what I call bro pop,
and Wild Cub is an example of that.
Cool males making pop music cool.
I love it.
Now,
coming in at number eight is Lowell with The Bells.
I think I'm starting to really see a theme for pop-up number five.
It's really synthy, at least thus far.
Things are gonna change up a little bit later,
but I'm loving this kind of old-school sound.
Super synthy, but still feels really current.
It's just like this song, The Bells.
It epitomizes that
sound that seems to be the theme thus far.
Now,
there's a few things I really love that we've established.
I love pop.
I love female vocalists.
I also really love harmonizing,
and Downtown does that so well on this song,
Till Tomorrow.
And maybe there's a reason why they harmonize so well,
because they're related.
Up next,
we have Phoebe Starr representing The Land Down Under.
She is Australian and giving us
something a little bit different.
Very dramatic.
I love it.
I love drama, in case you didn't know.
I also love the way I sequenced it.
We went from Till Tomorrow to Tonight.
Number 11 is a song by this band I love,
who I've been a huge supporter of for a while.
Actually, KID is a new name of theirs.
They used to be called The Boom Boom.
Not only
have they changed their name,
but they've also changed their sound a little bit.
They
went from being super pop to a little bit more rocky.
And this new song, Cigarette,
captures the vibe super well.
They're still super awesome.
I think the girl, the lead
singer of this band,
is a superstar,
and I am thrilled to have them on this compilation.
I am really feeling this weird pop movement happening.
Melanie Martinez, I would say,
is part of it.
FKA Twigs,
who is not part of this compilation,
but whom I also really enjoy as part of it.
And Mizan is also giving me that really cool,
different,
weird,
quirky pop.
Not so quirky,
but more like weird in the best possible way.
And anxious will make you not feel anxious,
but just make you feel,
feel things.
Up next,
we have a rapper and somebody that I think is super,
super talented.
Trey Mission.
He's a new rapper.
You might not have heard of him,
but he really reminds me of Kanye in the best way possible.
He, I think, is destined for big things.
Now,
we're slowing things down a little bit with Old Man Canyon,
Phantoms,
and Friends.
Sadly,
the compilation is coming to an end with track number 14.
Just a few more songs left,
and this is setting the tone for the end.
Number 15,
we've got The Score with Don't Wanna Wake Up.
If you like Hey There Delilah,
you'll love this song.
It really reminds me of that.
Sometimes less is more.
This song is about the basics, you know.
It's just a great melody,
great lyrics,
and simple instrumentation,
but super, super effective.
I love it.
Number 16,
the second to last song,
is Fox with Blue and White.
And I was introduced to this band by John Cameron Mitchell.
I love them.
The voice for this singer,
the voice of their lead singer,
is so special.
This is a really special song.
And finally,
finishing up pop-up number five is Feels Like Coming Home by Jetta.
This is a real special song, too.
I guess I saved the two best for last.
No, they're all really great,
but these two work really well together and last.
I hope that this compilation made you feel like dancing.
I hope that it made you feel like exercising.
I hope that it made you feel happy
and connected with all your feelings.
And I hope it made you feel special
like this song does for me.
So thank you so much for supporting New Music,
buying this.
And if you like it, share it with your friends.
Thank you again.
You're awesome.
And I look forward to pop-up number six.
