We decided we wanted a name that would indicate that there were both men and women in the group,
because it was the first group that actually was sexually integrated, so you might speak.
So we were trying to think of a name, and we were sitting around watching a television special,
and we had been, you know, all staying together in the Virgin Islands,
and I was kind of keeping house and doing the cooking and stuff, and they were singing,
and we had sort of a communal type existence,
and it was sort of like if the ladies would cook the dinner, the men would, you know,
take out the garbage and that kind of stuff.
And we were watching the special on the Hells Angels, and one of the guys,
Les Crane or somebody, asked them,
what do you call your women? And this guy said,
well, some call them cheap, but we call them mamas.
And so it became a gag, you know, well, if the mamas don't cook the dinner,
the papas will go out and get the cat food, and it became the mamas and the papas.
