Smoking cigarettes behind bleachers before the bell rang.
We were Superman,
the front man in a garage van called the Kings.
Bulletproof and always right.
I was a legend in my mind.
Never had a doubt I was gonna make it all the way.
She was 17,
a rebel prime queen chasing dreams.
Man,
the crazy things I tried to catch her eye,
but she wouldn't blink.
Till that summer back in 89,
with a crooked smile and the truth in her eyes.
She said,
you better know this ain't no small thing.
And nothing's ever gonna be the same.
So we took a chance and we both jumped in.
Around the world and back again.
We were busting loose and breaking free.
We were
living on the edge of 17.
It was our first house on 2nd Street.
She was 9 to 5 at the Dairy Queen.
I was playing bars for tips in a jar
in a cover band called the Kings.
I took out
jobs to make ends meet.
For Jenny I'd do anything.
Never had a doubt we were gonna
make it all the way.
She was everything.
My north, my south, my west, my east.
Always
thought the two of us was just enough,
all we'd ever need.
Till that summer back
in 95, with a crooked smile and two pink lights.
She said,
you better know this ain't no small thing.
Nothing's ever gonna be the same.
Couldn't tell you even if I tried.
All the things that crossed
my mind, but I never loved her more that night.
We were living on the edge of sleepless nights
and lullabies and birthday cakes.
At first tries,
the wins,
the wears,
the hows,
the whys.
The first day of school goodbyes, minivans,
soccer games.
Tell me again why I can't take it.
I can't believe how fast things change.
Nothing's ever gonna be the same.
Now she's 17,
rebel prom queen chasing dreams.
And the crazy things I try to catch her eye,
but she won't blink.
