Last October, I had the privilege of singing
in some of the Negro churches in Albany, Georgia.
Of course, you know, it was silly, my going down.
It was like taking coals to Newcastle.
They had so much good music
that there really wasn't much sense.
I accept that I sat back and listened to them
and heard some good music.
Really, you have no idea what it's like
when you find a gang of people that have been raised
since they were knee-high on this kind of music,
and they know how to join in on the basses
and the altos and the tenor parts.
And the harmony just rolls out,
and the new verses come.
Somebody stands up in back and sings out a new verse
nobody's heard before.
Many of them are old songs, but they've changed them.
You've heard this, but this is a little different
than the way you heard it.

Tell you what, on this song, you better not try clapping
because Carnegie Hall's too big.
By the time that clap gets down here,
well, the second clap is halfway up there
and you get all mixed up.
But you just try singing it.
