If You Gotta Go Now was written the same day as I wrote a song called Lover Money with the same menand this would have been, Lover Money, if you do the career math correctly, was my very firstsolo single and it was the first thing I released. And when I came to Nashville to start writingsongs for me, which had never happened, this was the day it happened. And I wrote it with MattThiessen and with Jeff Cohen, both those songs. And Matt, which I didn't understand untilour time when we were writing, is the, you know, the ex-boyfriend of Katy Perry. You know, and I was doing my best not to ask him because, you know, there was a little bitof a Katy Perry crush I probably had at the time and maybe that was inappropriate to talk to himabout. But what was fun is we were being playful with our conversation to get to know each otherand that's how we got to Lover Money. I said, well, hey man, why'd you come to Nashville?Because he was from LA. And I said, you come for Lover Money? He goes, I don't know, but we'rewriting that song. You know? And I started to realize that my everyday conversation is a thingthat we end up writing songs about, which I didn't get before. I thought this was gonna be a differentexperience. So, If You Gotta Go Now is a dialogue between a man and a woman. She's singing all theverses, right? So, she's the forever nagging, like, relationship telling you. So, the way I doit when I try to explain it to people in my life is, you know, I have a hand puppet on my righthand and the puppet will sing to me all of the verses and then I stare at the puppet and thepuppet can't look at me in the eye when I sing the chorus to her. Which is, look, if you gotta go,then you gotta go. And I mean, kinda cool is the first time you've had nothing to say.Because she's been yelling at you the whole time. And what was a problem for me is thatI could never explain that on a recording without it being a female voice and a male voice. So, there's been a forever confusion about this song. So, I decided, again, the confusion will work its way out. The song is true. And once you understand that thisis what's going on, you will laugh in ways that now you're listening to everything that has beensaid to me about me, all the things I need to change to stay in this relationship. I'm gonnasay that this is all about me and not about Katy Perry singing the verses to me, because I'm sureit is just about me. Enjoy the song. 10.
