My pappy said, son, you're going to drive me to drinking if you don't stop driving that hot rod Lincoln.Have you heard the story of the hot rod race where the Fords and the Lincolns were set in the face? That story is true, I'm here to say, I was a-driving that Model A.Had a Lincoln motor, it's really souped up, that Model A body made it look like a pup. It's got eight cylinders and uses them all, got overdrive, just won't stall. With a four-barrel carbon dual exhaust, with 411 gears, you can really get a loss.Got safety tubes, but I ain't scared, the brakes are good and the tires are fair.Pulled out of San Pedro late one night, and the moon and the stars were shining bright. We was driving up the grapevine hill, passing cars like they was standing still. All of a sudden, in the wink of an eye, a Cadillac sedan had passed us by.And I said, boys, it's marked for me, by then the taillight was all you could see.Now the fellas rid me for being behind, so I thought I'd make the Lincoln unwind.Took my foot off the gas, and man alive, I shoved it down into overdrive.Wound it up to 110, my speedometer said I was topping in.My foot was glued like leather to the floor. And that's all there is, there ain't no more. Now the boys all thought I'd lost my sense.Them telephone poles looked like a picket fence. They said, slow down, I see spots. The lines in the road look just like dots.Turned a corner, side-swiped a truck, crossed my fingers just for luck.My fenders were clicking the guardrail posts. The guy beside me was white as a ghost. Now smoke was coming from out of the back, when I started to gain on that Cadillac.I knew I could catch him, I thought I could pass, don't you know, then we'd be low on gas.Flames were coming from out of the side, feel the tension, man, what a ride.Said, look out boys, got a license to fly, that Caddy pulled over and led me by.Now all of a sudden, she started to knock, down as if she started to rock. And I looked in the mirror, the red light was blinking, the cops was after my hot rod Lincoln. They arrested me and put me in jail and called my pappy to throw my bail.He said, son, gonna drive me to drinking if you don't stop driving that hot rod Lincoln.
