Dear Danny,
how are you?
Are you
missing me?
Do you still
have your job
at the old factory?
And do you tell our little boy
about the elves in the tree
outside his window?
If he stays real quiet,
he can see them.
Dear Danny,
are you happy?
You're better off, you know.
No use staying with a dreamer who's got places to go.
But will you tell our little boy about the good things of me?
And tell him rainbows are real enough
to follow them.
And I want you to know you were the very,
very best.
Don't blame yourself for my leaving.
I'm
just not ready yet to rest.
And that boy,
you make him proud
to be free.
Don't let him tie up
his spirit.
He could be a lot like me.
Dear Danny,
darling Danny,
locked away inside yourself.
You never could let go enough to step down off your shelf.
But will you tell our little
boy
about the sand and the sea?
Maybe someday I'll take him down
to see them.
So will you tell my little boy about the elves in the tree?
All he has to do is believe in them.
All he has to do is close
his eyes.
You know,
one of the things that I love the most about New York
is that everybody is in therapy.
We Texans bury our rage until it accumulates
enough that we just climb up into that bell tower.
So when I first moved up here,
I was doing this off-Broadway show called Closer Than Ever.
And I lost my voice during previews.
I thought, oh my God, my career is over.
And overnight,
I turned into one of those neurotic,
nasty, musical comedy actresses, singers.
Oh my God. Oh, it was awful.
I wore silk scarves.
I couldn't talk on the telephone.
I drank tons and tons of herbal tea.
What is that *?
Anyway,
it got so bad,
I finally broke down and went to therapy.
Dr. Kimmel, I've been singing all my life.
I don't understand.
Can you tell me why?
Why?
Why do I sing?
Why do you think you sing?
Is it for the approval?
Do you need the approval?
Does it come from this deep-seated competitive drive?
Do you always feel the need to win?
Sally,
we have had great success with Gestalt,
age regression,
therapy,
and Jungian analysis.
Today,
I have a new assignment for you.
