Two of my favorite songs are The Way We Were.
You see, there's the one way we were that you all know from the movie The Way We Were.
But there were two way we weres because Marilyn Allen, being very creative and very prolific writers,
finished the song eight weeks before we needed it.
And they said, well, gee, we never have the opportunity to write a second lyric to the same song.
So they wrote another lyric to it, to another melody, by the way, by Marvin Hamlisch.
I thought it would be interesting to sing it tonight because it wound up on the cutting room floor
and tonight we figured we'd pick it up and sing the other The Way We Were,
which we don't call The Way We Were Two, but to distinguish it from The Way We Were One,
we call it The Way We Weren't. That's what we call it.
When I wander through my mind
In corners I can find the way we were
In the places memories sleep
I keep the day we were
The way we were
We were wistful, we were young
All the smiles of love were waiting in our eyes
And we were neither innocent nor wise
As we are now
Now we hope to make the memories last
But time's been known to change the past
Only in some yesterday
We'll safely stay the way we were
Isn't that pretty?
Can it be that it was all so simple then
Or has time rewritten every line
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we?
Could we?
Memories may be beautiful and yet
What's too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget
So it's the laughter we will remember
Whenever we remember
The way we were
The way we were
The way we were
